Sector 36 Story Deep Analysis and Explanation :
At the beginning of the movie, we see a boy named Prem (Vikrant Massey ) who is watching Sab Banega Crorepati and knows the answers to every question. Prem has a wife and a daughter who live in the village. Prem serves as a servant, takes care of a house, and lives very happily because he is the owner of the house. However, he does not live there.
We see him take a big knife and go to the bathroom. The dead body of a girl is lying in the bathroom, which he cuts into pieces. After this, we see Inspector Ramchandra Pandey, who is very brave and honest. He is not loyal to the uniform but prefers to follow the flow of the system. When a man comes to file a missing report for his daughter, Pandey refuses to do so, saying that children always keep disappearing, and there’s no need to worry as the daughter will come back.
When the man goes to put up posters in the station, he sees many missing posters there, indicating that this was not the first case and that the negligence of the police is visible. The girl whose love broke her into pieces was the same. Now we see children playing cricket when the ball goes into the drain and a child named Ali goes to retrieve it. He finds the ball but also the skeleton of a hand.
Now the police come to investigate. That drain lies between Sector 36 and Rajeev Cam, where the immigrants lived. The police feel that some monkey is involved, so they do not take the matter seriously and suppress it. We see that Prem is watching everything. That house is just next to the drain. We see that Ali is going somewhere at night when Prem lures him with chocolate and abducts him. Prem first forces himself on the children.
Prem fears nothing because he knows that the children come from very poor families, so no one will listen to them. The story goes back, and we see Prem’s childhood, where his butcher uncle used to force himself on him. One day, Prem got angry, took a knife, and killed his uncle.
The story comes to the present, where we see Prem taking out a box from the fridge with the name Chhote Lal. Prem, who is a compounder in a hospital, used to cut children into pieces, wrap them in polythene, and throw them in a drain or a pond.
Now we see a man named Bassi living in Mumbai, who says to his granddaughter, “Bring me some change of clothes.” The girl says no, “I want mommy.” As soon as his wife arrives, Bassi gets nervous and starts behaving normally. The owner of the house looked after by Prem is Bassi. So, Prem calls him and tells him that he is coming tomorrow and tells Chumki to come tomorrow evening.
There was a girl named Chumki. Prem knows how many children he has wronged until now and then killed them and scattered them here and there, but he worries about nothing and lives peacefully without worrying about anything. Now it’s the day of Dussehra. A fair is going on, and Ram Leela is taking place in which Inspector Pandey is playing the role of Ravana. He and his friends are there when suddenly Chumki’s father comes there and says that his daughter is missing. “You have been troubling us for so many days. If it was your daughter, you would know,” Pandey gets angry after hearing that.
Prem is present in the mask of Ravana to find his next victim. Prem takes Pandey’s unconscious daughter, but Pandey notices him. When she falls, he runs after her, and Prem runs away, leaving the girl behind. Chhote Lal had also come to the ambulance lake with Prem, but seeing Prem running away, he pretends to be unaware and starts helping Pandey take the girl to the hospital. While chasing Prem, he tries his best to catch her but fails.
Pandey scares people, but when he sees the same thing happening with his daughter, he realizes his duty and how wrong he was. Without understanding the pain of the families of those children, he now sees Vivaan, a child from a very rich family, going to school but getting kidnapped in front of his house.
Pandey himself calls Chumki’s father and writes her FIR. Her father tells Pandey that a rickshaw puller had dropped Chumki outside house number B5, and Chumki always took the same rickshaw. There is talk everywhere about Vivaan being kidnapped, with the entire media and police involved in the same case. Pandey goes to inquire about the house.
Prem opens Bassi’s door, pretending to be an innocent boy. Pandey starts interrogating Bassi, who then tells his story, explaining his connections with influential people, and showing that he has access to the top. Chumki’s father comes shouting that Bassi forced himself on his daughter. Bassi says he gave him money, and Pandey beats Chumki’s father for making his daughter work as a prostitute.
Senior Officer Jawahar tells Pandey to solve Vivaan’s case. Junior officers caught Chunki’s rickshaw puller and found Chumki’s phone from him. Pandey makes a complete report of Chumki’s case and shows it to the senior officer, indicating that Chumki used to go to meet customers with the same rickshaw puller. Bassi used to give a certain amount of money to Chumki’s father every month and gave money to Chumki every night. When the rickshaw puller went to pick up Chumki, Prem opened the door and gave Chumki’s mobile phone to the rickshaw puller, asking him to keep it somewhere. The rickshaw puller did nothing, but Prem had done something, so he was taken into custody.
Senior officers order Prem’s custody. Pandey catches him immediately. Prem is very relaxed, there is no tension on his forehead, and he acts as if he is on a date at a café. When Pandey arrives, Prem apologizes, saying he didn’t know she was Pandey’s daughter and asks for forgiveness. Pandey asks if he knows Chumki, and Prem admits, saying he killed her.
Pandey and the senior officer are shocked by Prem’s calm demeanour. Prem explains how he was forced into sex by his uncle and then killed him. He describes his killings and organ-selling business to Pandey and the senior officer. Pandey slaps him, asking why he killed those children, to which Prem indifferently replies.
Senior officers arrest Bassi. The families of the victims are angry and ransack his house. Bassi has access to all kinds of things, and people engage with it. Pandey is dismissed from his job, and the case goes to IBIO.
Pandey meets Prem’s wife and gets a DVD containing proof of Bassi’s actions. He watches the DVD, stunned by the cruelty he sees. While waiting for the bus, Pandey is attacked by goons who destroy the DVD. The story jumps six months ahead. Bassi is given a clean chit by the RBI, and Prem is sentenced to death. Pandey’s junior, now a senior, was complicit and got promoted.
Pandey’s disappearance remains a mystery, with a missing poster in the police station. A junior officer finds a parcel containing another DVD, possibly revealing more evidence against Bassi. The movie ends with this cliffhanger, based on the heart-wrenching Nithari case of 2006. The film points out how the system fails ordinary people, leading to such heinous crimes going unpunished.
Cinematic Elements of Sector 36 :
- Direction and Screenplay: Aditya Nimbalkar has done a great job as a director and it’s equally good to have Bodhayan Roychaudhury as a screen-play writer who makes the drama realistic enough while keeping up the tempo. The film does not emphasise the presentation excessively but always maintains and increases suspense from the first to the last scene.
- Performances: The lead actors Deepak Dobriyal and Vikrant Massey have done a very good job and have realistically portrayed their characters. The appearance of these characters enriches the plot adding the aspect of sadness to the story and making people feel more sympathetic towards those characters.
- Visuals and Sound: The visuals such as cinematography and sound also contribute to the horror and suspense theme of the movie. In front of the audience’s eyes, it is evident that the director masterfully used the camera, lighting, and sound effects to give the audience an uneasy feeling while viewing the events in Sector 36.
